HFI — A Good Samaritan

On March 9th 2020, while out in the community looking for a student from Hamilton High School, Mr. Patrick Sutton, Marion Co. Truancy officer and HFI Team Leader Billy Owen found a family who had just moved here from Kentucky.  This family was comprised of a single mother with six (6) children, aged from 12 to 2 yrs. old. The mother moved here due to some problems she had with DHR in that area and got scared that she may be reported as an undocumented citizen and possibly get separated from her family. She has a husband who works in Ohio and gives them some financial support

Three days later, March 12 we got the children enrolled in school, which the mother had requested. On March 16th, the schools closed due to the Coronavirus. HFI’s task at that point was to secure a constant food supply and begin the process for an EBT card.

The mother's phone broke so Team Leader Owen secured a new phone for her and brought more clothes.

Although the family did not know about HFI, the family learned to trust Mr. Own and will decided to call if they need help, food or even to read her mail when in English. She knows very little English, but the kids speak are fluent in English and served as the translator.

Their housing is poor, but manageable, this is an ongoing process and HFI will be involved with them for a while to support and guide them as they become  self supporting. HFI will also try to find her employment for the mother.
